How in the world did the Nazis/Japan manage to take over so many countries...during ww2?

In modern times usually when a country invades another country, they invade a small, defenseless country like Sadaam did Kuwait. but how in world does someone essentially take over a whole continent with powerful countries in it? Do you ever think something like that could happen again?
